PERSONALITY
Derek is a very friendly guy, which was easy to tell even when he was a toddler, always going up to other kids to make friends with them, and more often than not striking up conversation with strangers. He's not exactly excessively outgoing, he does enjoy being by himself once in a while and never feels the need to be the center of attention, but he's definitely not a loner. He needs people in his life, and he usually has no trouble making friends. He's a smart guy with a good head on his shouldes, responsible to a fault and very punctual - there are few things he dislikes more than being late, or other people being late for that matter - that's a big pet peeve of his, actually. He figures that if people take the trouble to give a certain time for him to be somewhere, then the least he can do is make sure he gets there on time, and he has a hard time with people who don't give the same courtesy.
He's got his father's talent for music, and has loved playing the piano ever since he was a small child. It's his passion in life, and although he knows it's not easy to find a job in the performing arts field, he will try until he can't try anymore, and if by then he hasn't succeeded, then he'll just fall back on teaching and that'll be the end of it. He doesn't specifically need to be famous, he just loves to perform, but at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is that he be able to play. He's not quite as skilled as his father is at performing, and he especially doesn't have his talent of writing music, but he's a lot more comfortable with being in front of crowds of people, which somewhat evens it out. Besides, he's never minded not being as good as his dad, considering the fact that he's his biggest role model, and as such, he just aspires to maybe someday reaching his level, and works as hard as he possibly can to get there.
The dating scene is a bit of a complicated situation for Derek. Although he's good at making friends, he doesn't really always know how he's supposed to behave in a relationship, and often ends up just making things more complicated than they need to be for himself. He's dated a few girls through his high school years, and then a few more since he started college, but somehow nothing that ever really lasts all that long. He doesn't overly mind as he figures he's still pretty young anyway, but he does hope to someday find a girl he can spend the rest of his life with.
LIKES AND DISLIKES
Derek's favorite color is white, and he's not a fan of light green. He loves winter, and could do without spring. He's a dog person, and he hates rodents. He could eat salmon any day of the week, and he craves pancakes most often, but he hardly ever eats red potatoes, and dislikes chocolate mousse. He's not a juice drinker, he much prefers tea. He loves to play the piano and read, but dislikes watching sports on tv. His best subject in school is Literature, and his worst is Gym.
APPEARANCE
Although Derek was practically a copy cat version of his dad as a child, he's grown and developped features that make him a lot more his own person and don't necessarily strike as having a definite resemblance to either of his parents specifically. His black, loosely curly hair is kept to a neat, short length, and his dark brown eyes are a bit on the smaller side. He has a pointed chin with a slightly bigger than necessary nose, and straight white teeth behind nicely sized lips. He does take a lot more after his dad on his height, standing at 6'1", and has more of a lanky built without much muscle mass to it. His fashion style is casual, but he always makes sure what he's wearing is clean.
FAMILY DYNAMICS
Derek isn't the most family oriented guy around, but he does still love his parents a lot. He especially has always looked up to his dad ever since he was a child, and to this day he's still a role model to him. When looking around at colleges, he tries to pick somewhere that wouldn't be too far away from home so he could still come by and visit once in a while, and although he doesn't specifically miss home a lot when he's away, he's always happy to go back during longer breaks and spend time with his mom and dad. He knows both his parents are very successful people, and although he aspires to be like his dad a bit more because he's choosing the same kind of path, he respects both of them a lot.
With Emma, he gets along well, and they hardly ever fought growing up, either. They're not exactly the closest of siblings - he doesn't make that much of an effort to find out what's going on with her life, and she doesn't reach out to him a whole lot either to know what goes on in his, so he figures they're pretty evenly non caring. Not that he doesn't care about her per say, he does love his sister, but if they're not enemies, they're not exactly best friends either.
