So, the past few months had been... well, not the best ever. That was probably an understatement, but at this point it all felt a bit too numb to really spend that much more time thinking it through to come up with a better adjective. Alyssa had been Mackenzie's friend practically since the day the younger girl had been born, and coming to the realization that she was in love with her along with no longer being on speaking terms hadn't really made the beginning of her first University year all that great. Mostly, she had decided to put the whole of her focus on studying and working to keep herself as busy as possible. It didn't work as well at night though, when her thoughts just kept her awake, or on nights like tonight when she had nothing to do, because she was only a part timer and so wasn't priority as to who needed hours given to. As it was, she'd been sitting cross legged on her bed for the past half hour, playing with her phone in her hands, going back and forth between various news applications and her contacts list. Eventually pressing on one of the names on the list, sighing lightly as she brought the phone to her ear and listened to it ring.

Felicia settled into the couch and turned on the tv, using the remote to select a show from the DVR that she'd missed by working the previous night. It was still fairly early in the evening and Nate was working the early dinner shift tonight, so she wasn't planning on eating until he got home, having grabbed a late lunch. In fact, she really wasn't planning on doing much, except maybe putting some laundry in after finishign up the episode she wanted to watch. Surprised when she heard her phone ring right after she'd pressed play, but pausing the show and getting up so that she could go and grab it out of her bag as she hadn't been expecting anyone to call this evening. Not one to usually worry about the worst situations she was simply surprised when she saw Mackenzie's name flashing on the screen. She couldn't even recall the last time that Mackenzie had called her out of the blue. "Hello?" she answered, her confusion evident as she tried to figure out if perhaps maybe the girl had just hit the wrong number in her phone book.

Mackenzie wasn't a hundred percent sure what she was doing right now. She didn't know what she planned on telling her Aunt once she answered the phone - it wasn't like she called her up every week to play catch up. As it was, she'd been bad enough at keeping up with her own parents, and if her mom didn't call her a few times a week, she probably wouldn't speak to her that often either. But Alyssa still hadn't forgiven her, and it was starting to look more and more unlikely that she ever would without the explanation that Kenzie was physically unable to give. Literally. And seeing as she hadn't answered the last few calls she'd made, she'd decided she might as well just take the hint - but that didn't mean she didn't still want to know how her best friend, if she was even allowed to still call her that (which, probably not) was doing, and the best way to find out seemed to ask her Aunt. She could tell she hadn't been expecting her call any more than she'd expected making it as soon as she answered, forcing a small smile in the hopes that it would affect her tone some. "Hey Aunt Felicia," she greeted her. "I was just... erm... you know, just calling to see how everyone's doing. You, and Uncle Nate, and.. Alyssa?" she asked, her voice a bit smaller than she would have liked.

Though not the type to worry, Felicia couldn't help but have the thought that something must have to be wrong if Mackenzie was calling. Maybe something had happened to Valerie or to William and she'd been the one to have to call people, but then that didn't seem too likely either. Overall she was just unsure of what this phone call was going to turn out to be. Not taking a seat yet as she waited to hear where Mackenzie was going to go with things after she greeted her, the younger girl's tone sounding a bit off from what she knew of her. Her eyes narrowing a little as her best friend's daughter mentioned that she was calling to see how everyone was doing because that didn't seem right either. In fact, it wasn't until she asked about Alyssa that the comprehension finally washed over her and then she took a seat on the couch sighing a little. "Oh sweetie," she said, her heart tugging in her chest. Not even knowing what to say in response to that. "I... Uncle Nate and I are fine, like usual. But I honestly can't tell you how Alyssa is doing, I don't think I even really know."

Kenzie had never really been the type to confide into people very easily, and the fact that the only person she'd always been able to talk to about everything was Alyssa made this whole ordeal a lot more difficult and complicated than it already was. Of course, she could always talk to her mother, but it wasn't really the same. She'd always gotten along great with her Aunt Felicia, too - she did have a slightly stronger bond with her than with some of her actual Aunts and Uncles, which probably came from the fact that she'd spent so much time over at hers and Uncle Nate's house growing up without her own parents around, and even though she'd been a pretty self sufficient kid from a young age, there had still been times when, as a child, she'd had to go to either of them for comfort, mainly if she'd hurt herself or gotten sick, like the one summer they hadn't been able to go to Disney. Still, she wasn't really sure what to expect out of this call, and when she heard her Aunt respond that she couldn't tell her how Alyssa was doing as she didn't think she even really knew herself, she could feel herself deflating a little, giving a slightly shaky sigh. "That's okay, I just thought... I don't know, I'm sorry, I didn't want to disturb you," she spoke quietly, chewing lightly on her bottom lip.

Felicia had been hoping that Alyssa would make up with Mackenzie by now and she'd even tried to talk about it to her daughter, but the girl was more stubborn than even she and Nate had given her credit for and she was afraid that without an answer for Mackenzie's actions she might actually continue not to forgive her despite the fact that it was easy to tell whenever they spoke that she wasn't doing well. And she was more than willing to want to jump in and get involved, despite how often Nate reminded her that it wasn't a good idea. She cared about Alyssa, obviously, but she also cared about Mackenzie almost as much as her own daughter. Which was why her heart twisted a little hearing the shaky sigh the girl gave in response to her answer and the quiet words that she used to apologize with. "Mackenzie, you don't have to apologize," she assured her. "I promise that you definitely aren't disturbing me. Nate's at work and I had no plans this evening, so if you wanted to talk, I've got nothing but time. I'm just sorry I can't really tell you more. When she calls she mostly talks about what's going on with her classes." Well and with Declan but she didn't think that she had to mention that.

There had been many tries on Mackenzie's part to come up with the words that would possibly get Alyssa to speak to her again - but ultimately, she knew the other girl wouldn't forgive her until she gave her more than an apology, no matter how much time she spent on it. She also knew there was no point in trying to come up with a different reason than what it really was, because nobody could tell when she was lying better than Alyssa, and so there was no doubt that she would definitely know if she wasn't telling the truth. Unfortunately for both of them, the truth wasn't something she could say - whenever she tried, her throat tightened, her chest felt heavier and she could hardly breathe. It was an overwhelming reaction and she just tried not to think of it too much. Besides, what was the point? She couldn't even get through to Alyssa anymore. "I'm still sorry," she spoke with a light shake of her head. "About all of this. I miss her, but I just..." she took another sharp breath in, forcing her eyes shut to try and block the tears that threatened to spill. "You know, don't you? Mom told you?" she asked after a couple of seconds of silence. She wasn't angry at the idea that her Aunt Felicia knew the reason behind all of this, though she wished her mom would have kept it to herself, because at this point God knew who else she'd told. But somehow, she'd figured she would have shared with one of her best friends - at this point she was just looking for a confirmation that that was the case.

It was as weird in the Travers house not to hear Alyssa constantly bringing up Mackenzie as it had to be over at the Aldridge house for Valerie and William, the friendship between their daughters had been so strong for so long that Alyssa not bringing Mackenzie into conversation was weird. Shaking her head a little although the young girl couldn't see it as she apologized again and went on, causing Felicia's heart to hurt some at the sound of the sharp breath that she gave. God she hoped the girl wasn't going to cry and she didn't speak during the next couple of seconds because she didn't want to make things worse. Cringing a little as Mackenzie came out and asked if she'd been told by Valerie what this was really about. "I do," she admitted, guilt coloring her tone. "There just wasn't a way to explain why you left without all the pieces to the puzzle. It's not like she called me up straight away to gossip about it or anything. She just knew how worried Nate and I were about you and wanted us to have a full explanation."

Kenzie gave a small smile as her Aunt admitted to knowing about her feelings for Alyssa, sighing lightly as she went on to defend her mother's decision to share the information. "It's alright," she said as she brought her legs up to her chest and wrapped an arm around them, resting her chin atop her knees. "I don't mind that you know, or that she told you, it's just... it makes it that much more complicated that other people know when I just... can't tell Alyssa," she added, her voice hitching a bit as she spoke the other girl's name. "I tried," she assured her, not wanting to be judged any more than she probably already was by most everyone who knew the situation, or part of it. "And I couldn't, and now she won't even... answer my calls anymore, and I think she just hates me," she went on, her voice getting shakier and her breathing getting harsher with each words as tears started falling down her cheeks, shaking her head a bit as she hastily tried to wipe them away. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to call and get all emotional on you," she said as she tried to take a couple of deep breaths to calm herself down. She knew it had to be especially weird seeing as she'd never really been the emotional type to start with.

Felicia felt the need to defend Valerie as much as possible so that the next time Mackenzie spoke to her mom she wouldn't be upset with her. Like, she could get why she might be a bit upset if she chose to be, but Val really hadn't meant any harm by sharing the information. Smiling a little in relief as Mackenzie assured her that it was okay and that she didn't mind that she knew, because that made things easier. Though it quickly turned to a frown as she went on to talk about how it was more complicated when she couldn't tell Alyssa, noting the way that her voice changed as she spoke her best friend's name. Feeling the need to interrupt as she went on to say that she'd tried, but not wanting to make her close herself off either. It was a complicated place to be in. Rubbing her temples as she heard her continue on and listened to her voice get worse as she talked about Alyssa not answering her calls, really feeling even worse that she hadn't been able to get her daughter to just get over herself and forgive her best friend. "Sweetie," she said soothingly as the girl apologized. "Sweetie, you need to stop apologizing to me. If anything, I should be apologizing for not being able to get her to just act like an adult. But I promise you, she does not hate you. If she did she wouldn't shy away from telling you so and we both know it."

Mackenzie had never had to go through anything that really resembled a heart break. She'd never been interested in any one while going through high school, and she'd never dated either. The only times she'd gotten slightly jealous and uneasy was whenever Alyssa got involved in new relationships, but for the longest time she'd been able to push those feelings aside, until she'd actually had to be confronted to it this summer, and then everything had gone south. She didn't even know this could technically be considered a heart break seeing as the other girl wasn't aware of her feelings, but the feeling of loss from not having her best friend around anymore surely couldn't be any easier to handle than an actual break up. Shaking her head a bit as her Aunt tried to assure her that Alyssa did not hate her, and that she wouldn't keep herself from speaking up on that if she did. "But what if she never wants to talk to me again, or doesn't forgive me?" she asked, her breathing still shaky as she sniffled lightly. "Aunt Felicia, I don't know, I don't think... I don't think I can tell her, especially not while she's with someone else," she added. "And I don't blame her, I know I'm the one who messed things up by acting the way I did, I don't think she's wrong for not wanting to talk to me, I just... I just wish she would," she went on, her voice weakening some more.

Felicia was wishing right about now that she might have actually been able to see Mackenzie so that she could hug her or something, because just listening to her heartbroken voice and tears was terrible. Now she knew how Valerie had felt after she'd called her. Not that listening to Alyssa cry hadn't been difficult either, but Alyssa was more emotional in general and she'd heard her cry many times, this was a first with Mackenzie. She ran a hand through her hair as Mackenzie asked what would happen if she didn't forgive her because it was the question that had been bothering her a lot too recently and she didn't know if she could come up with anything honest enough and comforting. "She's got to come to her senses at some point," she said instead, knowing that it had to be true. "She misses you a lot, we all know it and it's okay if you did blame her some. This has been going on too long for you to feel all the blame. I won't lie and say that you didn't do anything wrong, but you're not the only person in teh wrong, honey. She's a stubborn girl, but I doubt she's stubborn enough to let herself lose you forever."

Mackenzie had never been one to require a whole lot of socializing in her personal life in order to be happy. As a teenager, she'd had a few friends in school whom she mostly hung out with during lunch time and such, but rarely at home, and she'd never had a friend that'd even come close to the kind of bond she'd shared with Alyssa since toddlerhood. And although the other girl had never lived nearby, and they'd only ever seen one another a few times a year, it hadn't affected the fact that they'd grown up to be intricately close, and not having her in her life anymore was really the hardest thing she'd ever had to experience in her life. Giving a small smile as her Aunt Felicia went on to say that Alyssa had to come to her senses at some point, and that she missed her a lot. Giving a light sigh as she added that she although it couldn't be said that she hadn't done anything wrong, she wasn't the only one to blame at this point, and that she didn't think her daughter's stubbornness would be enough to not speak to her forever. "I really hope you're right," she spoke with a small smile, giving a light sigh. "Thank you Aunt Felicia. For listening," she told her. "And, erm... I mean, I don't think she'd ask, but it'd probably be best if you didn't tell Alyssa I called," she added.

Felicia was hopeful that Mackenzie might be able to calm down a bit more and that maybe even just putting everything out there to someone would help her not feel as badly over it until the two girls made up. Of course, there was no saying that that would be the case and she was sure that it wouldn't stop her from being hurt in general, but maybe hurting less would be as good as she could get at the moment. Giving a slightly sad smile, suddenly glad that they were on the phone, when Kenzie said that she hoped that she was right because she really did too. Sighing a little as she asked her not to tell Alyssa that she'd called if she did happen to ask. Not really sure that having her ignore her presence was the best idea but not wanting to make things worse for the young girl either. "You know I'm always willing to listen," she told her sincerely. Even if she wished that she didn't have to in this instance. "And I won't bring it up with her. Though she wouldn't have any rights to be upset even if she did find out."

Although her Aunt had told her to stop saying that she was sorry as she wasn't bothering her at all, Mackenzie had to bite back another apology for just calling her up out of the blue to unload her own personal issues, when it had to be a pretty conflicting place to be in for her. After all, even if she seemed to think that Alyssa should be talking to her again at this point, of course she surely hadn't been happy about her own daughter being hurt this summer when she'd just up and left. However, for all the wasn't usually one to seek advice or comfort from others when something was a bit off in her life - or in this case, a lot off - she was glad that her Aunt Felicia had been there to pick up the call and listen to her. "I know, and I really appreciate it," she assured her as she said that she was always there to listen. Giving a light smile as she confirmed that she wouldn't bring this conversation up with Alyssa, adding though that she wouldn't have rights to be upset about it even if she found out. Somehow, she'd really still rather she didn't. "I don't really think that would phase her much," she spoke with a small smile. "But I should probably get some studying out of the way, now," she added with a light sigh.
