PERSONALITY
Celeste is always viewed as a very responsible, mature beyond her years type of person, and it's not entirely untrue. She does have traits of a natural leader, never forcing herself as such on others but somehow always automatically viewed as such in things such as group projects. She has a steady and calming presence, which tends to make others seek her out if they're in need of comfort, and she's always happy to provide it. Even so, she's not an excessively serious person - she has a very bubbly personality, and it's very hard to catch her in a bad mood. Of course, she has her rough patches, but she never allows herself to be down for long. She is of the school of thought that most things happen for a reason, no matter how hard they are to accept, which was one of the things that helped her a lot after her birth parents' passing, allowing her to come to terms with her grief and move on to acceptance. Of course, she knows better than to tell others this when they are going through a hard time, as she's aware it's not a helpful thing to hear - but it's a comforting internal message for herself, and whenever she's struggling with something, she reminds herself of it so that she can move on to focusing on how to solve her problem.
She's very passionate about many causes involving the environment as well as racial and social justice. She tries to get involved as much as she can, although she doesn't really live in an area where many things happen, and although her parents are very open minded, they do tend to put their foot down when it comes to her going off on her own to join protests and marches. Her mom has made a compromise to take her to specific events every once in a while, and in the meantime she holds a blog where she tries her best to educate others about the importance of supporting those kind of movements. She is usually a pretty fair person, and she feels other people's emotions very strongly, which can make her inclined to try and keep the peace. Intolerance is one thing she never backs down on though, as there is no such thing as an opinion when it results in the harm of others, and although she's never purposely confrontational, she also doesn't back down for the sole purpose of letting people stay comfortable with their problematic world views. She knows she alone won't change the world, but she is willing to do her part to improve it, because she was taught that there is power in numbers and that's a lesson she doesn't plan on forgetting.
Although she grew up in a heteronormative household, her parents made sure to expose their children to as much diversity as they could, and so there's not really a 'normal' or 'standard' type of relationship in her mind. She's not been involved in very many serious relationships yet, seeing as she's still pretty young, but she has been attracted to a variety of people throughout her life so far, and she's gone on a few dates that just didn't end up leading to anything more than friendship. She finds that she is drawn to people for who they are rather than what gender they identify as. To her, love is all about forming a connection, and that's really the only thing that should matter. She doesn't have much of a preference right now between dating casually or with the intention of building something long lasting, but she does always strive to create a bond that can hopefully outlast a romantic relationship if it isn't supposed to endure.
LIKES AND DISLIKES
Celeste's favorite color is green, and she's not a fan of orange. She loves summer, and could do without winter. She's a bird person, and she hates horses. She could eat eggplant parmesan any day of the week, and she craves cream puffs most often, but she never eats meat, and dislikes sour candy. She's not a juice drinker, she much prefers iced coffee. She loves to hike and garden, but dislikes doing the dishes. Her best subject in school is Science, and her worst is Languages.
APPEARANCE
Intimidating would probably be one of the last words to come to mind when looking at Celeste. Standing at a mere 5'1, she has a slender form with moderate curves, and although she's not skinny to the point of having a thigh gap, she's perfectly happy with her body. Her face is rounded, with high cheekbones and hints of dimples when she smiles - which she often does, showing off her straight white teeth. She has almond shaped black eyes, full lips and a small beauty mark on her chin. Her black hair is sometimes kept in its natural curly state, although she most often keeps it intricately braided, and she hardly ever straightens it, not wanting to deal with the heat damage it can cause. She's not really big on makeup, not having been exposed to it much at home, and she'd rather stick to a good skincare routine than clog her pores up. Of course, she doesn't mind playing off some of her features once in a while if the occasion calls for it, but it's really just for special occasions. She does pay a fair bit of attention to what's in style at a given time, liking to dress in a trendy way, and she always makes sure to accessorize accordingly, favoring earrings and hair jewelry most days. She wouldn't call herself active in the sense of working out at a gym or playing sports, but she does enjoy going for a jog, hiking or doing yoga.
FAMILY DYNAMICS
Celeste was two years old when she first met the Monroes. Her mother, after giving birth to her little sister, had fallen seriously ill to the point where she couldn't care for them, and with their father being deployed and no living relative around, they had to be placed into foster care. They stayed with Vanessa and Derek until a little after Celeste's third birthday, at which point their father returned home and was able to take them back, although the two families remained in close contact. Shortly before Celeste's sixth birthday, her father was deployed again. From that point on, everything started unraveling in her family life. Her mother found she was expecting another child two months after her husband's departure, and in spite of the knowledge that it would be a high risk pregnancy, she decided to try and bring it to term. She was 34 weeks pregnant when the news came that her husband had been killed in action, and the shock and grief sent her into premature labor. Four hours after bringing her son into the world, she passed from complications that caused a cardiac arrest.
There was no thought required when Vanessa and Derek took the three children in their care, and they've been with them ever since. Of the three children, Celeste is the only one who has clearer memories of her mother, although she doesn't remember her father quite as well. Her bedroom is plastered with pictures of the two family units she grew up in, and she is the fierce guardian of many of the trinkets they inherited, not that anyone would ever try to make her give them up. Their adoption was officialized a few months after her seventh birthday, although Celeste kept her birth name until she was twelve, at which point she requested to have it changed to Monroe with the condition to have her middle name changed to her first family name. Over the years, she has grown very close to Vanessa and Derek, and she is thankful to them for everything they've done for her and her siblings, knowing how high the chances of separation would have been had they not been there to take the three of them. Although she calls them mom and dad, there is still a separation in her mind, but it doesn't change how implicitly she trusts them. She knows she can depend on them for anything, and if it took a bit of time to get to this point, she has developed a sense of belonging.
She is very protective of both her siblings, and she considers it her duty to try and keep their birth parents' memory alive for both of them. It has caused a bit of strife between her and Dawn for several years, because her sister's primary grief reaction was to feel resentment, which was hard to accept for Celeste. As she got older though, she grew more accepting of Celeste's frequent reminiscing of their early childhood, and it made it easier for them to form a stronger bond. Even so, they don't have a lot in common, but it doesn't stop Celeste from making sure her sister knows she'll always be there for her. As for August, it's basically impossible not to love the kid, and she's closest to him out of anyone in the family. It sometimes breaks her heart to think that her birth parents didn't have a chance to get to know him, because he's such an awesome child. She tries to spend as much time with him as possible, and always makes that time as special as she can, especially knowing that she'll be off to college in the fall.
