The Magic Question (AKA 4 Annoying Times Mel Was Asked About Nudity and 1 Hilarious Time)
The first time:
"Does it bother you that like everyone has seen your husband's dick?" Amanda had asked Mel after the first movie where Oli had appeared naked had come out. Of course, this was after the blonde had already spent her own time complaining that she hadn't been warned about said penis appearing in the movie.
"Well considering how horrified all of you have been, I don't think that I need to worry," Mel replied dryly. Honestly, she hadn't been told that he was going to be fully nude. It was a moment in the theater where she said 'oh' a loud in surprise. Her American sensibilities still did not expect to see any full frontal in a movie. It'd gotten her some looks.
"But like, there are some people that were happy to see him naked," Amanda pointed out.
"At one point that would have been you," Mel pointed out, finding now a good time to remind Amanda of her own previous attraction to Oli.
"Okay, cause he's hot but like... come on! It doesn't bother you?" the blonde was looking at her like she was hiding something. "Really?"
"No Amanda, it really doesn't bother me," Mel shrugged, looking toward the room where her infant son was currently sleeping as she heard some movement. He'd better not be waking up, he'd just gone down a half hour prior. "Listen, it's Oli's body. If he's comfortable with everyone seeing it, I don't get a say. Besides, let's be real here, it's not like he was hard and it's not like there were a lot of closeups. So I mean it when I say that it doesn't bother me. I'm not going to change my mind just because you keep saying that it's kinda weird."
"I guess," Amanda didn't sound convinced but she recognized that she wasn't going to get anywhere for the time being. "Anyway, remind me again when you're going back to the States. If it's close to when we're visiting my family we might as well get together."
------
The Second Time:
It shouldn't have come as a surprise that Beth wouldn't let it slide when she gives her older sister a warning about watching the movie. "Wait, what?" the older woman's face looked surprised as she sat on the other end of a Facetime call.
Ryker was breast feeding on a boppi out of the frame but Mel gave a sigh as she has to repeat herself. "I said, when you watch it just be aware that you'll see Oli's dick at some point."
"Melanie! I have children here, you can't talk like that!" Beth switched the camera around and there was Michelle on the floor playing with some brightly colored toy as a tiny Kaitlyn lay in a seat next to her.
"And I've got one here," she replied, rolling her eyes at her sister's dramatics as she went ahead and turned the camera to face down at Ryker who was still feeding. "It's not a big deal."
"Okay well Ryker isn't talking yet. Michelle is. So, watch your language!" Beth admonished and Mel sighed deeply wondering if she was be told off by her older sister for things the rest of her life - even thoug1h she has her own baby now. "Why is he naked though? Is that really necessary? And why are you okay with it?"
"It's French cinema," Mel reasoned with a bit of a face as if that should explain everything. It did for her.
"And what's your point? Why does that mean that the plot requires your husband to be like... fully nude?" Beth was suddenly leaning to look at something and then she'd telling off her own daughter. "No, Michelle, remember, we give kisses to sissy, not grabs. No grabbing sissy."
Mel looked down at her own son who had slowed down and was on the verge of falling asleep any moment. Gently she ran a finger along his silky cheek, smiling softly as she looked down at him. Her nieces were beautiful, but they didn't have anything on her son.
"Sorry, about that, but no. What plot did it serve?"
"Beth, it's French cinema. It may be the first time Oli has been fully nude on camera, but it won't be the last. I can assure you. And it's really not a big deal. So everyone saw his d-"
"Melanie Blair!" There was a sharp cut off before she could continue. "Do not say that word again while my children are in the room."
Closing her eyes, Mel took a deep breath before she continued. "Fine. So a bunch of people are going to see his flaccid penis." Beth noticeably cringed at the choice of wording but couldn't tell her off. Honestly, her reaction made Mel feel better about it. "If they want to good for them. You are making a much bigger deal of it than anyone else here is. Nudity is not that big of a deal. It's expected. So just take my warning to heart and either don't watch it or just be prepared to cover your eyes. And if you must, warn Sam too. Though I'm sure he will expect a lot more nudity in a French film than you did."
Beth pushed her hair out of her eyes and shook her head. "I cannot believe you."
"Love you too, sis, and I'll give you heads up the next time there is a film where he's going to be naked," Mel said, certain that there'd be more.
------------
The Third Time:
It wasn't until she'd gone with him to more premieres did anyone ever ask her about it on the red carpet. The French reporter for a channel that focused on celebrity programing was the first to ask her something other than if she was proud of Oli's work or who she was wearing for the evening.
"You're American, right?" she questioned, holding the mic toward Melanie.
"Uh, yes. I am American," Mel confirmed, stealing a look at Oli and wondering where this was going.
"American films are famously a lot more strict in terms of rating than European countries. Does it bother you that your husband is in films that could not be shown in your home city because of his nudity?" the reporter questioned, looking at her with a slight smirk. "I know in this film there are scenes that Americans would deem to be too 'mature' for a general release. Do you find you still tend to agree with that mentality for ratings?"
A firm, cold smile crossed Mel's face. There had been talk lately from gossip sites that Oli had only ever married her because of Ryker and that a baby had trapped him to be with a stereotypical American - prudish, obnoxious, and undiscerning of the French arts. "I don't have any problems with the films that Oli makes. Every one has been great. I was raised in the United States so obviously it was a bit of a surprise the first time I realized the extent of the differences," she explained, trying to keep her annoyance out of her tone. "But if people think I have a problem with nudity, it's not true. Oli's got a great body. And it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that directors have realized that and audiences tend to respond to that. I can't blame them, honestly."
Next to her she felt Oli squeeze her hand as he chuckled and when she looked at him. he gave her a grin. "I think once she said that it was a 'good surprise' when she realized that I have nude scenes. Hopefully she still feels the same way."
She flashed her husband a warm smile, feeling some of her annoyance fade before they were motioned to move onto the next reporter in the long line looking to get clips of interviews with Oli at the premiere. At least no one else was likely to really talk to her.
-------
The Fourth Time:
"I don't think that I'd like it," her co-worker mentioned to her as they were backstage getting ready for the next show they were putting on. "I mean, I think it's more that it's recorded forever. You know? People can just pause and look as much as they want! I think that's what I'd have the biggest problem with. Do you ever think about how many people can just pull up his dick and stare at it."
Melanie bit down on her bottom lip and pulled her hair up and under the wig that she had to wear. "It's not really his dick," she replied.
"He has like a body double?" There was note of scandal here.
"No, I mean, yes, it is his dick. But it's not like... it's a film capture of it. At one point in his life. It's not the same as actually seeing it in person," Mel tried to explain as she grabbed her shoes to put them on. She was always trying to explain it. If people wanted to pause a scene to stare at Oli when he wasn't even at his most impressive it didn't concern her. Hell, even if they could see the whole picture it wouldn't concern her.
"I'm just saying..."
"Yes, I know. And I'm just saying that I really don't mind. No one ever believes it but it's true. Whatever happens to him on screen doesn't change our relationship," she straightened her skirt as she stood and stole a glance at the clock. "Honestly. Even if he was showing it off in person I don't know that I'd mind as long as it was just showing."
"We're very different people," her fellow dancer commented, shaking her head as she stood as well. It was show time and Mel pushed the thoughts of her husband's acting career from her mind. Why everyone wanted to talk to her so much about his penis with her was always a surprise.
-------- The Fifth Variation:
It was Thanksgiving and they were visiting Michigan to spend the holiday with Mel's family. It was the first time in a couple of years that they'd made it for this holiday.. Right now everyone was sitting together at the table in her parent's house with some general chatter going.
Then, suddenly, Michelle in all of her infinite 10 year old wisdom turned to look at Oli and Mel. "Uncle Oli, how come you get to have sex with different people than Aunt Mel?" she asked, quite crossly.
Oli had been taking a bite before she'd started the question and he choked a little on the food that he was eating. Wine came out of Mel's nose as she snorted, causing an unpleasant burn as she hurriedly grabbed at napkins.
Beth was looking horrified at her daughter and both of her parents looked clueless and a bit worried. "Michelle, we talked about this! It's a movie. It's not real."
Oli seemed to relax slightly now that he understood, but he was drinking some water. Finally, he cleared his throat. "I'm an actor, Michelle. It's pretend. I'm not having sex with anyone."
"If it's fake how come we saw your real penis?" Kaitlyn asked, and Michelle tilted her head in solidarity.
"Yeah, Aunt Mel lets you use your real penis for fake sex?" Michelle asked.
Mel brought the napkin she'd been using previously up to cover her face because she was certain that she was not going to be able to hold back the extreme amount of giggles that she was currently facing.
Across the table Sam just stood up. "Yeah I'm out," he said simply, heading for the door without any further comment.
"I'm not using my penis for fake sex. It's different scenes. They make a cut and then we pretend after I'm wearing clothes," Oli explained, looking over at Mel and seeing that his wife was currently barely holding it together. Her face was a shade of red and scrunched up as she held her hand up against her mouth.
"I didn't get to see your penis!" Dean exclaimed, apparently felling left out.
And that was when Mel completely lost it, dissolving into a fit of giggles so strong that she could barely stand as she tried to get away from all of this.
It didn't help that chaos seemed to break out for everyone when this was said. Voices overlapped in various tones and volume.
"Mom said you couldn't!" one of the girls was exclaiming.
"I didn't want to see it!" the other argued.
"Why do you want to?" that was Ryker's voice, sounding as confused as her parents seemed.
"None of you needed to see it," Oli was trying to explain.
"Girls, I thought we had sorted this out already," Beth was sighing, trying to talk to them.
Mel continued to gasp and giggle until she was practically falling out of her chair, losing track of who was saying what. Oli was looking at her in the most unimpressed way but every time she met his eyes it started all over again and she went to go and join Sam out for some of that air because she couldn't do anything else at this point.

4 Times the Schedule Came First and 1 Time it Didn't
The 1st Time: Some people called Marcus meticulous, but he called himself highly organized with a good sense of time management. As a child he'd been taught the importance of a schedule and he carried that mentality with him to college now that he was here. While others spent their undergrad careers balancing their books with parties and struggling to stay above water, he never did. His schedule kept him from falling victim to any such issues and so it had to be respected. Nothing broke the schedule, even his free time was planned into it. As a Sophomore, some people thought that he might have loosened up.
One such person was a program mate named Sue, who he knew was interested in him. She hadn't exactly been subtle about her interest, but he hadn't had any time to pursue anything. Besides, he wasn't sure if they were on the same page for what they were looking for right now anyway. Still, it didn't come as a surprise when she approached him after class one day. "Hey Marcus," she greeted, flashing a wide smile.
"Hi Sue," he answered back, looking down at his classmate. "How are you today?" Being polite wasn't something that he could get away from.
"Good," she replied, her head tilting slightly to the side. She was attractive, no doubt about it and she was dressed in a way to showcase it too. The thin fabric of her top clung to her modest curves, enhancing them and she'd clearly spent a decent amount of time on her makeup today, making her brown eyes seem warmer and her skin more flawless. Even her dark hair was framing her face in a really nice way. "I was wondering, did you want to go and grab a tea or something?"
"Right now?" he asked, raising an eyebrow as he wondered if this was more of a general invitation or not.
"I mean, yeah." She was curling and uncurling the fingers on her left hand, he didn't know if it was a nervous gesture or not because her voice was pretty steady and fairly confident.
"I can't," he said, shaking his head. There was laundry to be done, studying afterward, and then a shift tonight at the restaurant where he worked.
"Oh," she sounded disappointed. Nonetheless, she didn't allow it to dampen her spirits for too long. "Maybe tomorrow, after five?"
Again he was shaking his head. Tomorrow he had to hit the gym in the evening, then he had work again and then he had to do his paper. "My schedule is pretty packed," he answered.
It sounded like the sort of thing someone would say looking for an excuse to get out of going out with another person but he wasn't trying to get out of it. It was just that a pretty girl wasn't enough to make him abandon his carefully planned schedule. There was some free time in there, but he'd already allotted it out to others and though he knew someone of them would have said that he could have pushed things aside to make space for the time to grab tea with Sue, he wasn't wanting to do so.
Even when she looked considerably more disappointed. Even when she blinked a couple of times more quickly than she needed to. "Okay," she answered, then gave one of the worst forced smiles that he'd ever seen. The schedule was the schedule and she didn't fit into it. "I'll see you around, Marcus."
When she turned to leave he gave a shrug and then went on his way without a second thought. After all, he had plenty to do.
The 2nd Time: As a Senior in college, Marcus wasn't any better. His schedule ruled his days, serving him very well. People said that it was not really possible to have a balance in college but he had found one, thanks to his trusty schedule. Nothing was unaccounted for in his schedule - except if something truly awful were to happen, but then, well, he had an emergency plan in place as well. With the grad school plans that he had too, he had even more to add to that schedule as he tried to get everything sorted out for that.
His relationships were limited, at best, and tended to last a night or two. Maybe a couple of weeks before they dissolved. One such woman - a repeat hookup that he'd seen a few times - was currently laying beside him as he sat up, looking around her room and then moving to get out of bed. It was late, but he had plans early the next morning to be up and working out so he had to get back to his place.
"You could stay, you know," Lydia said, pushing herself up onto her elbow. Her fair hair was long and fanned out around her as she looked at him, her eyes running along his form as he pulled his clothes on.
"I've got to work out tomorrow morning before I get started with my essay," he explained, not at all tempted to get back into bed. He had fun with her, but the schedule had to be respected. If he didn't go home tonight all of tomorrow would be thrown off.
"We can work out together here." Her tone was suggestive and she looked up at him from under her eyelashes in a way that did make a part of him want to crawl back into bed with her.
It wasn't the dominant part by any means, however. "You know I can't," Marcus was matter of fact with this statement because it was something certain.
At this Lydia huffed and pulled her blanket up to her chest. "You could, if you wanted to," she shot back, suddenly sounding very annoyed. "You're the one who makes your schedule, Marcus. You're the one who decides what to do and when to do it. Pretending otherwise is a really cowardly way for you to avoid people."
Turning, Marcus raised an eyebrow toward the political science major. "Clearly, your invitation was about more than what you were saying," he thought a loud. "Lydia, I don't think I've lead you to believe that I'm looking for anything more serious than this. My schedule is my own, and you're right, it's my choice to follow it. I put a lot of effort into it. It works for me and I'm going to keep following it. If you don't like that, well then I think it's best we don't see each other again."
"Fine, go," she snapped. "Just know that you can't keep putting that schedule above everyone all the time."
He didn't say anything more, just sighed as he gathered his things and headed out of her bedroom. Well, it was sort of a bummer that he had lost this casual relationship but that was how it was sometimes. There wasn't any regrets to be had about this, if Lydia wasn't interested in continuing on as they were he couldn't force her to be and it was probably for the best that they weren't going to be seeing one another again.
The 3rd Time: Going to grad school had meant moving to another state and Marcus was admittedly happy for the change of scenery. It was new and different, it took a little bit of getting used to. The group of people that he was around was a lot smaller now, in terms of people actually in his program that he saw most days. There was a plan going in to find a day that would work for everyone to go out together and get to know one another better. Unsurprisingly, it was a bit difficult for all of them to agree on a time to meet up. He was one of the people making it difficult, he knew that much. It didn't stop him from doing it.
"What about Saturday night? Like after nine," Kelley was suggesting.
It so happened that at nine Marcus had already planned to be skyping with Evelina. They'd set it up already and he wasn't going to contact her and change it. Honestly, he already had checked his other free times with her to see if a Skype call would be doable but it for her with her job. "Can't, doesn't work in the schedule," he answered, a phrase that he'd said many times during the attempts to set something up.
"Okay, well maybe you can be helpful and move something in your schedule," Clayton snapped, clearly annoyed by how long it had taken for them to get things set up. "It seems to work for everyone else. So just, be a team player and move your stuff."
It certainly wasn't the first time that Marcus had been suggested to move his things around, but he didn't see a reason to do so. He'd committed this time to Evelina first, not only was it rude to try and back out of that now, but it was already committed to the schedule. It wasn't something that he would change. "I've already scheduled the time to Evelina," he explained.
"Is that your girlfriend?" Kelley seemed more interested now, raising an eyebrow in his direction.
"No, she's my best friend," Marcus corrected. It wasn't the first time that someone assumed that Evelina was his girlfriend, but he never let anyone take it seriously.
"So bring her along," Clayton did not seem to be any more inclined to be kind now.
"She lives in Michigan." Not that it mattered. If he had promised Evelina alone time he wouldn't substitute it by bringing her out to meet everyone in his program just because they wanted him to. Then again, knowing Evelina she wouldn't have minded going. Though he wasn't sure if her boyfriend would be big on that.
"Then see if she can Facetime some other time," Clayton was throwing out another suggestion.
"That would disrespect both of our schedules," Marcus looked at the other guy in distaste. Clearly this was not someone who respected other people's time and he wasn't going to put up with it. "If you're all set on going out on Saturday after nine just go without me. It's not a big deal."
"We're trying to find a time that works for everyone, that's the point," Kelley explained with a sigh.
"If he doesn't want to come, he doesn't have to come." Clayton it seemed, was not a big fan of Marcus, but he didn't care. Even though they'd be in the same program for the next couple of years it didn't mean that they had to interact.
"I'll go some other time," Marcus suggested as a sort of compromise. Maybe some time that Clayton couldn't make it.
It was agreed that this was a reasonable compromise and Marcus didn't have to change his schedule.
The 4th Time:
He wasn't even asked about changing his schedule this time. In fact, he only found out that it could have been a possibility when he was texting with Evelina.
I was really hoping to go out tonight, she wrote. But I couldn't find anyone to watch Amelia.
You never asked me, he wrote back, feeling a bit hurt that he hadn't been one of her choices. He loved Amelia and loved watching her - even if he couldn't work it in that much.
Marcus, it's the second Wednesday of the month. I know that you had to do your grocery shopping and that you had planned for a paper. It wasn't an emergency. Evelina knew his schedule better than anyone else. It wasn't all that surprising that she hadn't asked him if he considered that. Early in life she'd learned his respect for his schedule and she hadn't ever
I could have taken her grocery shopping with me, he wrote back not seeing how the infant would have hindered his shopping. And written my paper while watching her.
It's fine. As I said it wasn't an emergency and I know you've already planned to come in see us in a few days anyway, Evelina wrote back. Seriously, don't worry about it. I know I can count on you when I absolutely need you.
Marcus actually didn't feel bad about this when she explained it like that. There was a reason why Evelina was his best friend and the fact that she knew exactly how he felt about following his schedule as one of them. She never seemed to have any resentment over it either, over the fact that he valued his schedule and followed it as he did. And wasn't that what friendship was supposed to be about? Finding someone who liked you for who you were and didn't want you to change? So, he texted Evelina a few more times and then he went ahead and got back to work on his paper.
The 1st Time:
It was Thursday, Marcus was preparing to go and do his laundry. There wasn't laundry in his building so he'd have to go to the laundromat in order to do so. He had already packed his backpack with some of the reading that he had to do for class, planning on knocking out two birds with one stone. It was a pretty normal day in his schedule. There was no reason for it not to be.
Then his phone buzzed, a text message coming in. Looking down he saw it was from Kaitlyn, the blonde that he'd been hooking up with for the past month and a half or so. She was asking if she could come over tonight. If she did he wouldn't get his laundry done, he'd get wrapped up in her and she'd end up staying the night as she had last time that she'd come over. Once she arrived much of his productivity for the day was going to go out the window swiftly.
What time? he texted back, mentally trying to figure out how long it'd take for his laundry to be done. If she was planning on coming by later, well then, he would be able to get everything done before she arrived.
I was thinking nowish, she answered without hesitation. Kaitlyn was the type who didn't beat around the bush.
Yeah come over, he texted back without a second thought. The laundry could be moved to tomorrow and she hadn't minded when he had read for a little while last time, seeming to understand that he had certain things that he needed to accomplish at given points.
What he didn't seem to realize himself was that his immovable schedule shifted for her, rearranged itself and not because she was demanding it but because he found himself doing it in order to spend time with her. There was something about Kaitlyn, despite their differences, that had him just wanting to spend time with her whenever he could manage. Seeing her tended to make his days better, just spending time with her was good and not just because he was getting laid when he did. No, there was something different that he couldn't put his finger on. And if he stretched his schedule and shifted it around her... well, it wasn't really a bad thing.
He did so because he wanted to, not because she was asking him to and maybe that was the difference. Maybe that was what he hadn't had before - someone who made him want to adjust his schedule around them. He didn't give it more of a thought though, only pushed it out of his mind and pulled out his book, figuring that he'd get some of that reading done as he waited for Kaitlyn to show up.
