Halloween has always been one of Gabrielle's favorite holidays. She loves to dress up and pretend she's someone else than plain little her - all she has to do is put on a costume, and suddenly she's not so ordinary anymore. She's a skilled witch who can turn her sister into a frog if she won't stop talking, or she's a dainty fairy who can fly away and go further than she's ever been allowed to before. She can even be a fluffy kitten if she wants, or a magical unicorn - whatever strikes her fancy becomes a possibility on Halloween.
Well, usually it does anyway. This year though, Halloween isn't quite so fun, and she's reconsidering loving it so much. A poorly throat and a stuffy nose kept her from kindergarten this morning, which was bad enough as it is - she was so excited to show off her princess outfit! - but as she hasn't gotten better by the time the evening rolls around, her mom decides there's no trick or treating for her this year. Which is not only heartbreaking, it's also unfair, because she knows Kristen won't share any of her candy with her. Shawn will, but that still won't be nearly as much as she would have gotten if she'd been able to go out.
So she buries herself under her covers with a sulky face and a sniffling nose, trying not to pay attention to her siblings as they get ready to leave. She only comes out when they're gone - she knows Mommy took them, because Daddy's only just come home from working at the fire station a few hours ago and he's too tired to go out tonight. Besides, someone needs to stay with her.
Her nose is red and it hurts, and her tummy doesn't feel too good, but if she can't go out she doesn't want to stay in bed any more. So she shuffles her feet over to the living room, where her dad sits on the couch with the tv on, a bowl of candy in his lap. There hasn't been much ringing at the door yet - but even if there had, there's a chance there would have been no answer, because now that Gabby steps closer to the dimly lit living room, she notes that her dad is asleep.
Normally, Gabrielle is the opposite of quiet. She likes speaking loud, singing loud, walking loud even. She just likes to be heard. But now she's stepping silently on her tiptoes across the hallways, and she has to stretch her arm to reach the light switch with her fingertips, but she gets it and turns off the outside lights, because her parents always tell her when a house has no lights, there's no more candy. And her Daddy needs sleep.
She walks over to the couch next and climbs up on it, careful not to make any noise - but even then, her Dad stirs and looks down at her, stretching slightly and almost dropping the bowl of candy to the ground. He catches it and puts it off on the coffee table as Gabby snuggles herself a bit closer to him, giving a couple of sniffles and wiping her sore nose on the sleeve of her pajama top. And Daddy doesn't tell her not to do that like Mommy does - instead, he just moves the blanket off the back of the couch and covers both of them up, wrapping an arm around her.
Gabrielle loves her Daddy. She loves being with him and telling him stories about her day, even though he doesn't always listen, because she has a tendency of talking over others. But right now, while she's got him all to herself, she doesn't feel the need to talk that much. It's nice to just sit here with him, and kind of cozy too. The house is quiet with everyone else gone and the tv muted, and she doesn't feel so badly anymore about not being able to go out trick or treating.
Maybe she can still love Halloween after all.
