Valerie has always known her eldest daughter takes very little from herself. She's always been so poised and serious, it's like she got none of genes at all. She's much more similar to her Dad, really. And that's probably why she shouldn't have been surprised when, just the night before, the six year old had come up to her to announce her costume pick for Halloween. Mackenzie wants to be a businesswoman. Just like Daddy. And when Val buys the pinstriped fabric to make the ensemble, she buys more for later. Because even years ahead, she knows Kenzie will need it.

Honestly, Mikayla never remembered Halloween being this exhausting. Of course, there's a difference between going trick or treating with friends as a teenager, and doing so as a mother of four, but she hadn't though it would be that bad. Until Rosalie started whining about the amount of walking and Lucas tripped over Elizabeth's train. She's definitely relieved once they finally get back home, and her husband get them all cleaned up and off to bed. She doesn't even feel bad about stealing a few pieces of candy from their bags, because being an adult on Halloween really doesn't pay.

Shawn is four when Ayla takes him costume shopping for the very first time. She's allowed herself to pick his Halloween outfit before, but he was very insistent that he wanted to choose for himself this year, claiming he knows ex-zak-ly what he wants. It doesn't take much imagination to know what it is, either, because there is one thing Shawn has been fascinated for ages now. It scares her beyond belief, if she's completely honest, but when they get back home and he tries on his firefighter costume, she tells him he looks just perfect. Because he really does.

Sometimes, things take an unexpected significance in your life as you get older - things you didn't necessarily care for before, or didn't pay much attention to. For Nate, that's Halloween. For the longest time, he's indifferent about it. It changes some when he shares his first kiss with Felicia at the school Halloween dance, but fades back to the background until years later, when just like that, it becomes one of the most important day in his life. Because as he holds his baby daughter for the first time, he knows not one meaningless Halloween will ever go by again.

Thomas is eight, and Addie doesn't understand why her son seems so nervous and fidgety as he gets ready to go trick or treating. He's always enjoyed it well enough, and he seemed very excited to be a pirate this year. Yet he can't seem to sit still as they get ready - that is, until the doorbell rings, and he springs up to go answer. In the doorway, Milo and Taylor stand with their daughters - but it's only when Addie notices the shy smile Thomas gives as he compliments Emily on her panda costume that she gets it.

Aidan and Mandy had known it would come to this from the moment they'd gotten home that night and found out the older kids had somehow gotten Isabella to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas, to get her in the Halloween mood. It doesn't even take an hour after they put her and Kelsey to bed until she comes to their room, all tears and trembling lips because she's had a nightmare. They let her climb up between them, and as they try to soothe her back to sleep, they promise to protect her from any monster, because that's what parents do.

Picking a costume for Halloween was a big responsibility for six year old Lacie. She'd never done it before - she'd always trusted her mommies to do it for her - but this year, they told her she should decide what she wanted to be. Which wasn't easy. Ariel had been her favorite princess for pretty much ever, because she loved the water just like her. But there was also Moana, who was even more like her, and that made it so hard. It took her a while, even envying little Kiana for not having to pick, but in the end, who didn't want to be a mermaid?

Kaitlyn is outraged. She really doesn't get why Michelle should get to pick her costume first, just because she's older. When does she ever get to pick things first? Never, that's when. And she wants to be a princess so much! She's never gotten to be a princess yet. What if that's what Michelle decides to be? The thought makes her pout as she watches her sister deliberate with her mom, but then, her heart soars - Michelle wants to be a fairy! So when her mom turns to her, Kaitlyn hides her glee and shrugs. "I guess I'll be a princess."

Joseph really didn't mean to frighten Anna that badly. Of course, not at first - it's not his fault she gets scared so easily. And so what if he knew that zombie would jump out at her? Isn't that what Halloween is about? Apparently, not to his moms, and so when she starts crying, he gets told off and trick or treating is cut short. Eventually though, he does start to feel a little bad. Anna did promise to give him all of her green suckers. He'll apologize tomorrow - and give her all his sweettarts, because they're her favorites.

Chloe gives a sigh of frustration as she sits across from Elsie, mounds of candy on the floor in front of them. Her sister has always been tough with negotiations, but this is ridiculous. Three Skittles packs for one Twix bar? No way she'll go for it. She doesn't even like Skittles, but she's not stupid - and that's what she says when she tells her what she thinks of her trade offer. Eventually though, Elsie throws in two lollipops and bubblegum, and they make the exchange. When all's said and done, this is probably Chloe's favorite part of Halloween.

Halloween has never been Skylar's favorite holiday. It comes from a mix of things, really - from having to wear uninspired costumes put together from her every day wardrobe to never having anybody around to take her trick or treating. This year though, it's different. It's not because she's dressed up nicely for once, or because she gets tons of candy. But the surprise treat bag she gets from the cute, blue eyed boy she likes is a sweet gesture, and the chocolate flavored kiss doesn't leave a bad taste on her lips. Maybe Halloween's not so bad after all.
