"I am never going to find anything here," Makenna Freeman declared quite dramatically in the middle of the costume store. Not only was it the day before Halloween, meaning that most of the good costumes that were in her size - a small - were already taken, but she simply wasn't interested in the ones that were left.
"Oh come on, you'll find something," her mother spoke up, trying to be encouraging as she held out a short red dress with wings attached.
"Mom. No. I am not going to be a lady bug," she shot down the costume, taking it back from the older woman's hand and shoving it onto the rack. "I didn't even want to dress up this year and now I've got to for my stupid theater class - that I didn't even want to take, by the way but it was all there was left for electives - and our teacher decides that she's going to mention that it's part of our participation grade the day before Halloween. Like what, she just assumed we'd all dress up in stupid costumes just because we were able to?"
Brooke Freeman gave a deep sigh and shook her head as she pawed through some more options. "Makenna, most people like dressing up for Halloween. I loved dressing up for Halloween when I was your age. It's a fun experience. You should really appreciate it more."
"Okay that's great and all but I don't want to dress up. Like, what's the point of doing it at school?" the teen questioned as she frowned over all the costumes that she looked at.
"To make things more fun! And if you'd taken up your Aunt Valerie on her offer to make you something, you wouldn't be having this problem. What about this?"
Again, the costume consisted of a short dress that she pretty sure wouldn't even make school guidelines. "No. Mom, Dad would kill us both if we came home with this. And what is even with that?"
"With the costume? It's an angel. I mean, yes, I get that you're not actually an angel but..."
The look that the girl gave her mom quieted her. Obviously she wasn't an angel, anyone could see that. However, that hadn't even been her point. "Thank you, Mom," she replied sarcastically. "But that's not what I meant. I meant, why are all of these costumes so skimpy? Like, here teenage girls, you can be skimpy crayon." She pulled out a tight fitting dress orange that had crayola written across it. Then quickly shoved it back onto the rack. "Or here, how about a skimpy witch?" Again, another short dress that was made of particularly clingy fabric. Which she again pushed back onto the rack with disgust. "Skimpy nurse? Skimpy firefighter? Skimpy vampire? You can be whatever you want as long as it's skimpy."
"They're not all that skimpy.. there's..." her mom struggled for a moment to try and pull out a costume that would fit her criteria, eventually pulling out a full body suit.
"Okay, cat-woman is skimpy too! That's like a full body suit. You might not be showing off your bits but you're giving nothing to the imagination," Makenna spat in disgust, shaking her head. "Like, what, do I have to be a nun to get out of the skimpy girls costumes? You don't see all those guys costumes being like 'skimpy Batman' or whatever else. So how come I'm supposed to prance around in stupid short skirts and look like I'm barely wearing anything? This is exactly why I don't want to dress up for this stupid holiday. It's not even a real holiday. It's just an excuse for people to dress up in stupid, skanky, offensive costumes and have people 'be okay' with it. Like, if you want to dress in a nurse costume like that for your partner, just do it in your bedroom and call it good."
Brooke stayed quiet through the whole of her daughter's little rant and then finally held out a costume that actually wasn't too bad looking in terms of coverage. Unfortunately, it was a prison jumpsuit and it was a unisex costume. Basically, it wasn't winning any awards.
Throwing up her hands in exasperation she shook her head. "Screw it. I'd rather just take the dock in my grade. Let's just go."
Stupid, sexist Halloween costumes weren't worth her time anyway.
