Emily Parker looked uneasy as she drove up a two-track style driveway. They were way out of the city at this point and she didn't even know how she'd gotten dragged into this mess to begin with but every second she advanced down the twisting driveway - which, of course, was surrounded by trees - she was regretting it. Finally, a house came into view and it seemed way too fitting for the occasion. An old run down sort of place that looked like it should probably be condemned. It was dark and there didn't seem to be any other cars in sight as they pulled into a clearing.
"Are you sure that we're in the right place?" she asked, turning to her passenger as she stopped the car. Not yet taking the key out of the ignition because everything about this seemed wrong.
"I'm sure," the other girl answered confidently, unlocking her door and hopping out without a second thought.
"Wait!" she called, fumbling with her keys as she took them out and turned off her car reluctantly.
Hurrying out of the car and locking the door behind her before she approached the darkened house with her younger sister. Nervously, she dug her hands into her coat pocket and made sure she had her hand on her cell phone as she glanced around at the mostly deserted surroundings. Shivering a bit as a gust of wind came by, it was chilly with her Minnie Mouse dress and thin tights under her coat. Worse the house that they were coming up to didn't look at all inviting, she doubted if it even had a source of heat. "Karen, I thought you said that we were going to a Halloween party at your friend's house," she commented with a frown.
The other girl looked decidedly unbothered by both her questioning and the weather, still confidently strutting in her heels despite being dressed in a thin body-hugging black dress with just a light jacket to cover it. She was a vampire this evening, which seemed to suit her natural coloring as she already had black hair and such fair skin that she never could seem to tan without burning. "I never said that we were going to my friend's house," she specified as they made it to the porch. "I said that we were going to a party with my friends."
Emily stopped right before the stairs that led up the wooden porch. "That is not what you said!" she insisted. "You told me we were going to your friend's house for a Halloween party!"
"Okay, so maybe I stretched the truth a little," she shrugged, stepping up onto the porch. "But come on, we're going to be late."
"For what? Our deaths?" the older girl stood firmly in her place. "There isn't anyone else here! We're out in the middle of nowhere and it's creepy as hell! I'm not going inside. We're going home."
"You can go home if you want, but I'm going in," Karen replied, heading straight up to the foreboding door and pushing it open. She walked inside, the sound of her heels clicking across the wooden floor audible even from where Emily was standing.
And the elder sister didn't follow, she simply folded her arms across her stomach and watched the girl walk in. She'd be back in a moment when she realized that they were only people here and she'd obviously gotten the place wrong. When she came to that realization they could leave or Karen could text whoever it was that she needed to text but there was no way that Emily was going into that house. None at all.
At least, she was pretty sure that there was no way. That was until a minute later when the front door suddenly slammed shut, causing her to jump and squeak. "Karen?" she called, waiting for an answer.
Of course she didn't get one. Still, she waited an extra moment and then groaned in the realization that she'd have to make sure her baby sister was okay. First though, she pulled out her phone, only to find that there was no service. "Shit."
Swallowing hard she took a deep breath and then walked up the stairs and into the house. Stepping in she was met with silence, darkness, and cold. Grabbing her phone out of her pocket she switched on the flashlight app, shining it around. The room she entered into looked like it was a greeting area and off to her right was definitely a living room. Dust covers were draped over the furniture and there was a smell of mildew hanging thickly in the air. The place looked like a mess from what she could see and for a moment she couldn't compel herself forward.
"Karen Ava Parker, I swear if you're just trying to lure me in here and jump out at me..."
There was still no answer but she did hear a creaking sound that seemed to come from further away followed be a few thuds. Suddenly it was difficult to breathe and she was frozen on the spot, her heart beating faster as she tried to tell herself it was just her younger sister playing a stupid prank. A very stupid prank. She might even tell Mom and Dad about this because it wasn't funny at all. Forcing herself forward, she continued past the living room area and noticed a kitchen where a light did seem to be casting a faint glow. So, she walked into it, holding her phone out in front of her and trying to see more. All that she got out of it was a door that was ajar and it seemed to be where the light was coming from.
"I'm going to kill you for this, Karen," she muttered to herself as she approached the door, trying to make her hand stop shaking. A low murmur was coming from the open door and she had to take a deep breath as she pulled the door open far enough that she'd be able to walk in.
A loud creaking filled the house and caused the murmuring to pause and made Emily's heart rate spike. Still, she forced herself forward and started down probably the most rickety looking stairs she'd ever seen. The dim light at the bottom wasn't enough so she kept the hand that wasn't holding onto the hand railing on her phone, pointing it down toward the steps so she wouldn't fall and break her neck.
Arriving at the bottom and having just enough time to look up when about twenty teenagers jumped out - in terrifying masks at that - and screamed at her. Which lead her to scream back and fall onto the bottom step, dropping her phone.
"Em! Oh my God, are you okay?" Karen's voice rang out, rushing over to help her up as someone turned on all the lights and revealed the basement to be well done up for a Halloween party.
Emily stared for a moment, trying to ignore the tears that were welling up in her eyes from both embarrassment and pain. She knew her sister hadn't meant for her to actually get hurt, but this was still not fun and totally unnecessary. She hated Halloween. Quickly, she pushed herself up and glared at Karen. "No I'm not!" she replied, her voice shaking. "And if you've had your fun, I'm going home. Enjoy your Halloween party."
"Em, don't be like that. Come on, we've got a whole party to enjoy!" the younger girl waved it off.
But Emily was not having it. She straightened her dress, straightened her coat, shook her head and informed her sister that she needed to find her own way home. Making her way back upstairs she vowed that she was never trusting Karen with anything Halloween related again. In fact, she was going home and handing out candy with her Mom for the rest of the evening.
Hell, she was going to hand out candy for the rest of her life on Halloween. One thing was for sure, she was never, ever going to a 'Halloween party' ever again.
"Are you sure that we're in the right place?" she asked, turning to her passenger as she stopped the car. Not yet taking the key out of the ignition because everything about this seemed wrong.
