Anna had felt very guilty about the reshoots that had let her to leave Claire alone for most of the day. The other girl had insisted that she hadn't minded, but she still felt guilty that of her short visit she'd had to leave her alone. When she got back though, the blonde had seemed to be in a good mood. In fact, over dinner when her mom asked if Claire forgave her for taking Anna away all day she gave a sly smile and said that she'd found plenty to do. Something was off but she couldn't put her finger on what. Judging by the looks that her moms shared though, they seemed to know exactly what it was which made her feel all the more confused. She'd noticed the blonde texting quite a bit more than usual today, but she didn't know if that directly had anything to do with this or not. Still, she wasn't about to confront the other girl in the middle of dinner about it. Actually, she wasn't going to really confront her at all, since that was definitely not her style.
Still, that night when they got into bed she turned to face the blonde and looked at her curiously. "So, what did you get up to today?" she asked.
"Well, now, don't freak out," Claire started, which was not a very reassuring way to start things out.
In fact, not only was it worrying but it was also confusing because she wasn't the type to freak out and Claire knew as much. So what did that mean? Had she done something dangerous? She might worry then, maybe freak out a little, but it might be justified. "Claire, this isn't exactly a reassuring start," she told her friend, her voice a bit tighter with worry. She didn't seem to be injured but maybe she'd missed it.
"Right, sorry," she apologized. "Didn't mean to freak you out. I had sex with Joseph."
"You- you-" Anna felt dumbfounded, all she could do was stare at the other girl in a slight disbelief and blink a few times. "Had sex with..."
"Joseph, yes," Claire completed with a nod. She clearly wasn't joking about this, which Anna didn't know if she liked any better. "It's really not that big of a deal."
"Not that big of a-? Claire, that was your first time having sex, it's like.. a big deal," she replied. No, sex didn't have the same significance for everyone, but the first time was generally agreed upon by most to be a pretty important milestone. If nothing else, it was a first introduction into the world of sex and she'd remember it for the rest of her life. That was a big deal.
"Okay but I wanted my first time to be with someone who knew what they were doing so that it'd be good. And it was good," she put a bit too much emphasis on the word good for Anna's liking and the way she looked made it clear that she was certainly reminiscing about her earlier activities. "It was what I wanted out of a first time. He's got-"
"Uh uh. No," Anna suddenly cut the blonde off, shaking her head. "I don't want to know what he's got. I don't."
Claire looked at her, meeting her eyes and searching them as her eyebrows pulled together. There was silence for about a minute before she sighed. "Anna, if I'd known that it would upset you I wouldn't have done it," she said earnestly. "I sincerely believed that you wouldn't mind."
Now she felt guilty, not wanting to make her best friend feel bad over something when she'd earlier been feeling good about it. "I'm not upset," she said.
Claire gave her a look that said she wasn't buying it. "Anna," she spoke sternly. "I know you. You'll have to try harder than that."
"I'm not upset," she insisted and then sighed, pushing some of her hair behind her ear. "I'm just... I'm confused. And I'm surprised. And I don't really understand it either."
"He's really hot," Claire said in way of explanation, as if that were enough and maybe it was. Maybe she'd accept it under normal circumstances but in this case it still didn't feel right.
"I mean, I suppose he could be but..."
"But?"
"He's just so.." Anna paused, her brows pulling together as she looked for a term. "So.." Even if Joseph wasn't here to hear what she said to say, he was her brother and she couldn't go around saying things about him. "So..."
"So what, Anna?" Claire asked, amusement creeping into her tone. "You know you can share your thoughts with me. I'm not going to tell him what you said."
"That's not the point," she replied, shaking her head. "He's so... he's so Joseph."
At that Claire laughed out loud, grinning at her friend. "Oh, Anna. I get it, I get that you and Joseph aren't close and that he rubs you the wrong way. I'm not looking to marry him. We just had some chemistry and an opportunity and it was great."
There was something though, in the way that Claire spoke that still made Anna uncomfortable. Maybe it was the slight affection that seemed to be under the words that left her worried, worried that the other girl might develop stronger feelings for her brother who certainly could not be trusted with the hearts of her friends. Or maybe she was imagining it, maybe it was just her fear that Claire might now get caught up on her brother.
Either way, for a moment she stayed in silence, and then sighed. "Okay, okay," she said in a somewhat defeated tone. "If you say it was only sex, then I won't worry about you."
"Oh Anna, you don't have to worry about me," Claire hugged her tightly. "I'm perfectly capable of handling myself. But it's sweet that you care so much. So I take it then, that you want no details."
"Of course I worry about you," Anna replied, sounding a bit incredulous at the implication that she wouldn't. "But no. Do not tell me anything about sex with Joseph. It's enough that I know what happened. I don't want to know more."
"Yeah," she sighed. "I figured you'd say that. I guess I'll find someone else to discuss it with." She moved to settle into bed. "Night, Anna."
Anna turned off the lamp that had been lighting the room and got into her bed with a sigh, her mind still buzzing with this new information. "Night, Claire," she said, unable to shake the worry still that things weren't quite as they seemed.
