Anna was happy to be home for the holidays, glad to be on break from her second year at the Academy and all the work that came with it but mostly glad that she was able to spend time with her parents again. She missed her moms dearly when she was at school, and now that she was back she was happy to have the time to catch up with them. Of course, she was also looking forward to the holiday celebrations that would take place but those were still some days off. As such, both of her moms were busy working today, so she was propped up in the living room watching a Hallmark movie that was both cheesy and predictable, but still made her feel good.
A few minutes later, Landon came downstairs from where he'd been hanging out in Joseph's room, she assumed since she hadn't actually been around when he'd come in. "Hey Anna," he greeted her, taking a seat on the couch next to her.
"Oh hi Landon," she smiled at her brother's best friend. Truth be told, she liked him a bit better than she liked Joseph, but maybe that was because Landon was a more mediating presence. Someone who tried to diffuse situations with humor. Not to mention, he was always extremely kind to her. "Come down looking for some food?" Like Joseph, he always seemed to be hungry.
"Nah, Joseph is being boring so, I figured I'd come see what you were up to," he answered, taking a look at the tv and raising an eyebrow as he turned back to Anna.
She gave a bit of a guilty shrug as she shook her head a little. "I can't help but like them," she told him.
"Yeah and what does your mom think about that?" he asked her teasingly.
"My mom doesn't judge," she said, then moved her head slightly from side to side. "To me. Out loud, anyway." Not that it wasn't still very clear that she was quite disappointed in her daughter's taste in cinema from time to time. Still, even though she was an actress and dramatic characters could be interesting and fun to play, the stories could get draining from time to time and sometimes she just wanted something light and fun to watch. "Besides, they help me be in a good mood."
At that Landon laughed and shook his head. "Are you ever in a bad mood?"
"I mean, yes, I have bad moods," she answered, although she had the feeling that it didn't come across as very convincing. Maybe because of the way Landon looked like he was still trying not to laugh. "I do! I just, I don't feel the need to share them with everyone else all the time."
"Alright, Anna, it's okay," he told her soothingly, lightly reaching out and rubbing her arm. "There, there, you don't have to pretend bad moods for me."
"I-" she started and then smiled and shook her head because there was going to be no winning on this front. "So, you're going to watch this movie with me, then?"
Landon looked over at the screen and made a face, then glanced back at Anna. "No, no I'm not," he said. "But before I go make Joseph be interesting, I wanted to talk to you about something."
This took Anna by surprise, confused about what Landon could have to talk to her about. Obviously it couldn't be anything relating to Joseph because she would be a horrible source of information. "Okay." She reached for the remote and hit the mute button. "Go ahead."
"Would you like to go out sometime?" he asked her, raising an eyebrow slightly at the brunette.
"Oh!" she stared at him entirely taken aback at the request. She'd known Landon for years and she supposed that he was cute enough, but she'd never considered him in a romantic light before. To be honest, the only person she was current considering in a romantic light was Noah, but who knew if that was ever going to happen. Still, she didn't think she was interested in Landon in that way, or that she could be interested in Landon in that way. "Does- does Joseph know you're asking me this?"
He looked at her a bit oddly, as if he didn't understand what that had to do with anything. "Yeah, he knows," he replied, slowly nodding.
"Okay, uh-" she didn't know what to say. Could she give him a shot? But did she owe him a chance when she didn't think she was attracted to him? No, she didn't. But then, he was so sweet and maybe it was just that she'd never thought about him that way before but if she had the time. But then what about her sizeable crush on Noah? There was no saying that that would go away...
While she wrestled with her own thoughts Landon watched her until the silence dragged on for a few seconds too long. "Anna," he said, pulling her out of her thoughts.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I was just-"
"Looking for an easy way to let me down?"
"No, that's not necessarily-"
"Anna," he sighed a little and shook his head before smiling. "It's okay. I get the hint, it's a no. It's fine. Don't worry about it."
"I'm sorry Landon, it's just.. I mean, I'm kinda interested in someone right now and I'm hoping maybe that will go somewhere and I just don't think it'd be fair to you and," she started explaining her thought process but he cut her off again by holding up a hand. Then that hand moved to gently pat her arm in a reassuring manner which seemed wildly strange considering she'd just turned down his offer of a date.
"Anna, you don't owe me an explanation. I'm a big boy, I can handle a no," he told her. Then stood up and gave a dramatic sigh. "Well I guess I have to go tell your brother he was right. Man I hate that. But no worries, I've survived it before and I'll survive it again. Enjoy your movie, Anna."
"Thanks?" she said, watching him as he headed upstairs and turning back to the screen in a bit of a daze, unable to fully process what had just happened. What had just happened? Her hand found the remote and she unmuted the television but just sat there for a moment longer replaying the very bizarre turn of events. Unable to still wrap her head around it, she reached for her phone and sent a message to Claire and Kylee. Hopefully someone could help her make sense of this out of this development.
